As a confirmed UFO skeptic (though, of course as a kid, I was a complete and utter believer!) I found this piece in today’s Australian fascinating. What is going on here???

US pilot ordered to shoot down UFO over Norwich

The Australian

20 October, 2008

A FORMER fighter pilot has told how he was ordered to shoot down a UFO the size of an aircraft carrier over England 50 years ago.

The encounter over Norwich is detailed in one of 19 files declassified by Britain’s Ministry of Defence and released by the National Archives yesterday.

RAF controllers told US pilot Milton Torres to “lock on” and launch all 24 of his rockets over the city, The Sun reports.

As the 26-year-old US Air Force lieutenant came within seconds of firing at the alien intruder – the size of an aircraft carrier on his radar  – it vanished at 16,000km/h.

Mr Torres, then based at RAF Manston in Kent, told The Sun: “It was some kind of alien snooping over England. I guess we’ll never know what it was”.

Speaking publicly about the incident for the first time, he said he was ordered late one night in 1957 to scramble in his F-86D Sabre fighter to attack a “bogey” hovering above Norfolk.

“I was told I would be firing a complete salvo, all 24 rockets. I was pumped up – this was the sort of thing that happened before a war,” he told the paper.

He had the UFO on his radar and closed in at almost 1125km/h before the shape disappeared off his screen in a flash.

Mr Torres, now 77, said: “I was smoking, as fast as I could go. This thing had a different propulsion system. It was not an airplane.”

He said he was visited afterwards by a sinister security official and warned not to tell anyone.

  1. GWL,
You ask what is going on here?
You may possibly live long enough to witness ‘people and flying craft’ from outer space. For people on this planet to believe that we are the only ‘intelligent life’ in this vast Universe, is in my opinion, rather one eyed.

Even if we were a-5 in an imaginary Universal System that extends from a-10 to a+10 we are but very miniscule individuals in the Great Pattern of the Universe.

Roll on a meeting between those other ‘people’ and ourselves, for I am a firm believer in the attitude that ‘we’ are not the only ‘ones’.

  2. yeah, when I say that I am a ‘UFO skeptic’, I don’t mean that I am skeptical about life elsewhere in the vastness of the universe – I agree with you that nothing is more likely, given the unimaginable immensity of space and the uncountable stars and planets even within range of our limited view.
I have to admit to being somewhat skeptical about the connection between alien intelligence and strange, unexplained sightings in the sky, though. As the wonderful Carl Sagan used to say, the chances that other intelligences (which he also believed in) would travel here in ‘ships’, only to appear briefly in fields of corn or in remote areas of the USA stretches credibility. He was a firm believer in the possibility of picking up signals from extraterrestrial intelligences, rather than actually meeting them in a field in Wisconsin!
Not that he had a corner on all knowledge!
No, it is just the compellingly weird nature of this kind of Defence Department record of a fighter being directed to shoot down an ‘aircraft carrier sized’ flying object, which subsequently shot from radar quicker than humanly possible that grabbed my attention. Not to mention the pilot being still around to make comment.
Of course, you can’t believe everything you read in newspapers, but it was fascinating all the same.

  3. Fascinating, exciting and spooky.
