little firemanRecently, a family here on the Coast lost their house and everything in it to a fire which started in one of the kids’ bedrooms. Fortunately, no-one was hurt; but…

Not long after that, a magazine quietly fell over on one of Christopher’s bedroom shelves one evening, landing on a small 12 volt downlight that was on at the time. Towards his bedtime, the faint smell of hot paper about to ignite alerted us to the danger and we were able to avert disaster.

But it got me thinking.

All that ‘get down low and go, go, go’ stuff is great for people who can walk, crawl or run to safety. Not much use if your arms and legs don’t work.

I have now installed a couple of these little red portable ‘firemen’ – one in the house and one in the guesthouse – to complement the fire blanket in the kitchen and the smoke detectors in the rafters.

Just in case.

I don’t fancy myself as a fire fighter, but…
