All I want for Christmas is a bakerlite phone

This was my Christmas present in 2012. Don’t you love it.

This is more than just a curiosity from the 1950’s/60’s. This is the actual phone we had in our home until I was about 12 years old. My eccentric father stashed it away in a cupboard in the shed decades ago, along with a multitude of other useless paraphernalia and I’m glad he did. When I asked for it for Christmas, he went on a search and rescue expedition in the cramped, bulging spaces of the shed for a couple of days and was able to retrieve it.

It now sits happily in my bookshelves.

Whenever I pick up the heavy bakerlite handset or place a finger in one of the holes to turn the dial and listen to that unique burring sound as it winds back, I am a boy again, calling one of my school mates.

Hope you got something for Christmas that made you smile too.

  1. The phone is now an international wonder. I think you have ruined any hope I had of Dad cleaning out his shed! It looks good in its new home – so glad you can enjoy it instead of the possoms.

  2. I suspect dad was already pleased with himself when I asked for it and he found it. Sorry about that.
